The Divine Origin (*Divina Origo*) of the Gospel and the Missional Commission of Foundational Apostolic Revelation: An Exegesis of Galatians 1:11-12 and the Grounding of a Reformed Dogmatic Theology of Evangelism
Systematic-Theological Exposition
The Divine Origin (Divina Origo) of the Gospel and the Missional Commission of Foundational Apostolic Revelation: An Exegesis of Galatians 1:11–12 and the Grounding of a Reformed Dogmatic Theology of Evangelism
I. Introduction: The Scholarly Clashes Surrounding the Divine Origin of the Gospel and Covenantal Fulfillment
1. Research Background and Problem Statement
Along the enduring battle lines of Christian dogmatics and practical theology, the theological determination of "evangelism"—specifically its soteriological and revelatory essence—remains an indispensable task intrinsically linked to the raison d'être of the church.[1] The fundamental inquiry must be posed: Is evangelism merely a human mechanism sustained by rhetorical mastery and secular marketing paradigms, or is it an eschatological proclamation grounded strictly in the supernatural revelatory act of the Triune God?[2] In seeking a definitive answer, Galatians 1:11–12 provides the most uncompromising and lucid apostolic premise within the New Testament canon.
Confronting the subversive agitators in the Galatian churches who challenged his apostolic legitimacy, Paul proclaims that the gospel he proclaimed was neither received from human mentors nor mediated through rabbinic transmission, but arrived directly "through a revelation of Jesus Christ (δι᾽ ἀποκαλύψεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ)".[3] This apostolic assertion functions as the supreme thesis confirming the divine origin (divina origo) of the gospel and establishing the absolute autonomy of his apostolic authority.[4]
Nevertheless, the unmediated immediacy of this revelatory claim introduces an intricate dogmatic problem: How are we to coordinate this direct revelation with the Old Testament covenantal heritage, the ecumenical kerygmatic tradition (paradosis) preserved by the primitive church, and the systematic evangelistic training models (e.g., Evangelism Explosion) practiced by the contemporary church?[5] As N. T. Wright has perspicaciously cautioned, projecting later Reformed scholastic constructs anachronistically onto Paul’s Damascus experience risks flattening the first-century apocalyptic and redemptive-historical shock of the text into a detached, purely conceptual epistemology.[6]
Accordingly, this study undertakes a horizon-fusion of historical-grammatical exegesis and Reformed dogmatics to formulate an integrated theology of evangelism. In doing so, it rigorously distinguishes yet organically coordinates the singular, foundational apostolic revelation (revelatio originaria) given to Paul and the ongoing, derivative proclamation of the church animated by the internal illumination of the Holy Spirit (illuminatio Spiritus Sancti).[7]
2. Scholarly Battleground and Major Debates
Contemporary New Testament scholarship and systematic theology have witnessed profound hermeneutical clashes concerning the dialectic between the "revelation" of Galatians 1:11–12 and the "tradition" of 1 Corinthians 15:3.
First, the Apocalyptic Paul trajectory—exemplified by J. Louis Martyn and Susan G. Eastman—interprets the apokalypsis of Galatians 1:11–12 as an absolute antinomy and vertical "divine invasion" against all human traditio-receptive activity (paradosis) and religious systems, thereby asserting a radical rupture with historical transmission and Old Testament redemptive-historical continuity.[8]
Second, the New Perspective on Paul, spearheaded by James D. G. Dunn, minimizes the cognitive and soteriological scope of the Damascus encounter, reducing it strictly to an "apostolic commission for the Gentiles." In Dunn’s formulation, the doctrine of justification by faith was not integral to the initial revelation but developed retrospectively through subsequent historical controversies at Antioch and in Galatia.[9]
Third, in direct rebuttal to these reductionisms, evangelical and Reformed biblical scholars (Douglas J. Moo, John M. G. Barclay, Seyoon Kim, Gerald O’Collins, and Philippe H. Menoud) have demonstrated the organic, redemptive-historical cohesion between the revelatory claim of Galatians 1:11–12 and the traditional transmission of 1 Corinthians 15:3.[10] These scholars persuasively demonstrate that the Damascus Christ encounter imparted the complete theological essence and soteriological core of the gospel, while historical tradition functioned as an essential, subordinate medium for preserving and authenticating that datum.[11]
3. Propositional Statements
Through rigorous grammatical exegesis and dogmatic argumentation, this treatise establishes the following three central theses:
- Thesis 1 (Divine Origin and Eschatological Christophany): The phrase "revelation of Jesus Christ (ἀποκάλυψις Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ)" in Galatians 1:12 must be construed as a plenary genitive encompassing both subjective and objective aspects. It denotes an objective Christophany—the resurrected Messiah breaking directly into historical space-time—thereby establishing the absolute divine origin (divina origo) of the gospel as the eschatological fulfillment of the Abrahamic covenant.
- Thesis 2 (Integrity of Foundational Apostolic Revelation and Derivative Church Tradition): Paul’s explicit denial of human instruction in Galatians 1:11–12 safeguards the unrepeatable uniqueness of the foundational revelation (revelatio originaria) closed with the apostolic age. Consequently, the ecclesiastical transmission of the kerygmatic tradition (paradosis) and the external proclamation of the Word (verbum externum) serve as the divinely sanctioned means of grace (media gratiae) for preserving and communicating this objective truth.
- Thesis 3 (The Inseparability of Revelation and Mission, and the Efficacy of the Spirit): The Damascus revelation was simultaneously the bestowal of the gospel’s soteriological core and an apostolic commission to the nations (commission). Contemporary evangelism, therefore, is not a craft of psychological manipulation or rhetorical artifice, but an eschatological ambassadorship wherein the Holy Spirit sovereignly applies the written apostolic witness through His internal illumination (illuminatio Spiritus Sancti).
II. Historical-Grammatical Exegesis of Galatians 1:11–12 and the Subversion of the Rabbinic Traditio-Chain
1. Grammatical Exegesis of the Triple Negation and the Deconstruction of the Rabbinic Chain
In Galatians 1:11–12, the Apostle constructs a meticulously crafted sequence of triple negations culminating in a single adversative affirmation ("Not A, Nor B, Nor C, But D") to demonstrate both the non-human character and the divine source of his gospel message.[12]
[Pauline Rhetorical Syntax: Triple Negation to Adversative Affirmation] v. 11: οὐκ ἔστιν κατὰ ἄνθρωπον (Not according to a human standard) v. 12a: οὐδὲ γὰρ ἐγὼ παρὰ ἀνθρώπου παρέλαβον αὐτό (Nor did I receive it from a human source) v. 12b: οὔτε ἐδιδάχθην (Nor was I taught it) v. 12c: ἀλλὰ δι᾽ ἀποκαλύψεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (But through a revelation of Jesus Christ)
First, the prepositional phrase _κατὰ ἄνθρωπον_ in verse 11 establishes that the gospel is not constructed along the lines of human norms, measures, or categories.[13] As John M. G. Barclay and N. T. Wright have convincingly argued, the preposition κατά here governs not the geographical or historical provenance (origin), but the normative pattern and standard of human evaluation (human norms or patterns).[14] Paul’s gospel is not a cultural product manufactured to satisfy human religious predilections.[15]
Second, the phrase _παρὰ ἀνθρώπου_ in verse 12a decisively negates any human intermediary or human origin (human agency or source).[16] The subsequent verbs, _παρέλαβον_ and _ἐδιδάχθην_, strike at the very heart of the first-century rabbinic traditio-system.[17]
Within Second Temple Jewish wisdom and scribal literature, tractate Pirkei Avot (Mishnah Abot 1:1) defines the transmission of the Torah through an unbroken generational chain: "Moses received (qibbel = paralambanō) the Torah from Sinai and committed (masar = paradidōmi) it to Joshua, and Joshua to the elders... and the prophets committed it to the men of the Great Synagogue."[18] The epistemic authority of rabbinic Judaism was entirely contingent upon this didactic pedagogy: receiving the oral tradition from a master (paralambanō) and mastering it through rigorous academic pupilage (didaskō).[19]
By repudiating both receipt (paralambanō) and instruction (didaskō) from the Jerusalem apostles or the school of Gamaliel, Paul asserts that he is by no means a "second-hand tradent." The ultimate authority of his apostolic kerygma remains completely independent of institutional authorization or hierarchical apostolic succession.[20]
Third, verse 12c pivots upon the sharp adversative conjunction _ἀλλά_, employing the preposition _διά_ to identify the supernatural conduit of the event: "but through a revelation of Jesus Christ (ἀλλὰ δι᾽ ἀποκαλύψεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ)".[21]
2. Theological and Syntactical Analysis of the Genitive in 'The Revelation of Jesus Christ'
Regarding the syntactical function of the genitive phrase ἀποκάλυψις Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, New Testament scholarship has historically advanced three interpretations:
- Objective Genitive: Jesus Christ is the direct object and cognitive substance (Content) of the revelation. The structural parallel in Galatians 1:16a—"to reveal his Son in me (ἀποκαλύψαι τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ ἐν ἐμοί)"—corroborates that God the Father is the ultimate author of the revelation, with the Son serving as its central object.[22]
- Subjective / Authorial Genitive: The risen, ascended Christ is the active agent who personally appeared to Paul and sovereignly delivered the gospel to him. The rhetorical correspondence with Galatians 1:1—"through Jesus Christ (διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χρισ토ῦ)"—underscores Christ's personal agency as the author of the encounter.[23]
- Plenary Genitive (Comprehensive Model): As Richard N. Longenecker and John R. W. Stott have posited, these options represent a false dichotomy; the syntax demands a plenary genitive.[24] The glorified Lord Jesus Christ was both the transcendent Agent (Subject) who unveiled the truth on the Damascus road and the absolute soteriological Reality (Content) embodied within that proclamation.[25]
3. The Eschatological Christophany of Apokalypsis and Covenantal Fulfillment
As Kim Chang-lak and G. K. Beale observe, the term ἀποκάλυψις in Galatians 1:12 cannot be reduced to internal mystical illumination or the cognitive assimilation of abstract dogma; it denotes an objective, visual, historical Christophany—the bodily manifestation of the risen Lord.[26]
G. K. Beale demonstrates that within the New Testament, the construct phrase "the revelation (apokalypsis) of Jesus Christ" almost universally denotes the eschatological parousia and final consummation (1 Cor 1:7; 2 Thess 1:7; 1 Pet 1:7).[27] Paul’s radical application of this phrase to his Damascus encounter reveals his profound conviction that the eschatological Messiah, who is to judge and renew the cosmos at the end of the age, had invaded present historical space-time proleptically (proleptic invasion), apprehending the Apostle in mid-stride.[28]
Furthermore, as N. T. Wright demonstrates, this apocalyptic rupture marks the long-awaited covenantal fulfillment of the Abrahamic promise (Gen 12:3; Gal 3:8). Through the cross and resurrection of Jesus the Messiah, the blessings promised to the patriarch have burst forth upon the Gentile nations (ethnē).[29] The gospel's revelation represents neither an evolution of human history nor a product of immanent religious progressivism, but the cosmic, apocalyptic disruption of "the present evil age (ὁ αἰὼν ὁ ἐν에στὼς πονηρός, Gal 1:4)" by the inaugurated reign of God.[30]
III. Redemptive-Historical Integration of Revelation (Wipf and Stock, 2010) and Tradition (Paradosis)
1. Critique of J. Louis Martyn’s Apocalyptic Discontinuity Model
The Apocalyptic Paul school, pioneered by J. Louis Martyn, utilizes Galatians 1:11–12 to posit an irreconcilable antinomy between divine apocalyptic intervention (apocalypse) and human historical transmission (traditioning).[8] Martyn asserts that revelation does not complete, refine, or validate historical tradition; rather, it strikes vertically as an absolute crisis that shatters human history and religion alike.[31]
Although Martyn properly emphasizes the radical transcendence and sovereign freedom of divine revelation, his formulation suffers from profound theological deficiencies. As N. T. Wright and Philippe H. Menoud have demonstrated, Martyn’s model of apocalyptic discontinuity severs the gospel from the organic continuity of Old Testament redemptive history and the covenantal promises of God.[32]
The revelation Paul received outside Damascus was not an ahistorical bolt that eradicated covenantal history; it represented the climax of redemptive history accomplished "according to the Scriptures (κατὰ τὰς γραφάς, 1 Cor 15:3)".[33] Apocalyptic transcendence and covenantal history do not stand in dialectical opposition. Divine revelation establishes historical tradition by fulfilling the covenant promises inscribed in the sacred text.[34]
2. Critique of J. D. G. Dunn’s 'Call-Only' Reductionism and the Revelatory Origin of Justification
James D. G. Dunn attempts to limit the cognitive scope of the Damascus event, arguing that Paul received merely an apostolic "commission for the Gentiles," devoid of a mature theology of justification.[9] In Dunn’s view, the doctrine of justification by faith apart from the works of the Law (erga nomou) was an ad hoc, retrospective theological construct devised in the crucible of subsequent pastoral conflicts at Antioch and Galatia.[9]
Yet, as Seyoon Kim and Thomas R. Schreiner have conclusively shown, the testimony of Galatians 1:16—"to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles"—inseparably binds the apostolic commission to its Christological and soteriological core.[35]
The instant Paul beheld the crucified Jesus vindicated as the risen Lord of glory on the Damascus road, his entire Pharisaic paradigm of legalistic self-righteousness was shattered. In that luminous encounter, he intuitively comprehended that divine righteousness is mediated solely through grace in the person of Christ.[36] Consequently, the Damascus encounter cannot be hollowed out into a mere functional call; it was a plenary revelation in which the missional mandate and the soteriological doctrine of justification by faith were born simultaneously as an indissoluble unity.[37]
3. Harmonization of 1 Corinthians 15:3 and Galatians 1:12: Foundational Revelation and Derivative Tradition
The ostensible tension between 1 Corinthians 15:3 ("For I delivered to you what I also received") and Galatians 1:12 ("I did not receive it from a human source") resolves seamlessly when one accounts for the distinct theological dimensions of the gospel.[38]
- 1 Corinthians 15:3: Treats the historical data (facts) of the redemptive events and the standardized, kerygmatic confession formulated by the primitive Christian community (transmission of confessional tradition).[39]
- Galatians 1:11–12: Treats the divine interpretation, the soteriological essence (theological substance and truth itself), and the ultimate divine origin (divina origo) of those historical realities.[40]
Drawing upon the insights of Gerald O’Collins and Peter Fraenkel, we must distinguish between the foundational special revelation (revelatio originaria), which was given once-for-all to the apostles to consummate redemptive history, and the derivative, ministerial transmission (dependent transmission) carried out by the church.[41][42]
As John Calvin observes in his commentary, Paul’s repudiation of human instruction did not demean legitimate church tradition or apostolic fellowship, but asserted that ecclesiastical authority must always remain subordinate to divine revelation.[43] Church tradition is the consecrated vessel that bears witness to the apostolic deposit; the fountainhead of that deposit remains none other than the Triune God.[44]
IV. Foundational Apostolic Revelation and the Church's Missional Commission: Grounding a Reformed Dogmatic Theology of Evangelism
1. Dogmatic Distinction between Foundational Apostolic Revelation and the Internal Illumination of the Spirit
A dogmatically coherent theology of evangelism requires an uncompromising qualitative distinction between the foundational revelation (revelatio originaria) bestowed upon the Apostle Paul and the internal illumination of the Holy Spirit (illuminatio Spiritus Sancti) experienced by contemporary believers in the reception and proclamation of the gospel.[45]
- Foundational Apostolic Revelation (Wipf and Stock, 2010):
Encompassing the incarnation, crucifixion, resurrection of Christ, and the unrepeatable inspiration granted to the apostles, this revelation constitutes the normative canon of Holy Scripture. Completed with the apostolic era, it is strictly unrepeatable and historically conclusive (once-for-all, ἐφάπαξ).[46] As Michael J. McClymond notes in his analysis of Jonathan Edwards, the epoch of direct, canonical revelation closed permanently with the establishment of the apostolic foundation.[47]
- Internal Illumination of the Holy Spirit (Illuminatio & Testimonium):
This refers to the sovereign operation of the Spirit when believers hear or proclaim the Scriptures today. It produces no new doctrinal revelation; rather, it sovereignly illumines the darkened understanding of fallen sinners to apprehend, embrace, and trust the objective truth already deposited in Holy Scripture (revelatio applicativa).[48]
This Reformed distinction decisively shields contemporary evangelism from subjective mysticism and the perils of theological enthusiasm (Schwärmerei), anchoring the evangelist unreservedly in the objective authority of the written Word (verbum scriptum).[49]
2. The External Proclamation of the Word (Verbum Externum) and the Doctrine of the Means of Grace (Media Gratiae)
Central to Reformed ecclesiology is the doctrine of the external means of grace (media gratiae externa): God does not ordinarily dispense His regenerating Spirit through mystical interiority detached from the spoken proclamation of the gospel.[50]
[The Triune Mechanism of Salvation via the Means of Grace] The External Proclamation of the Evangelist (Verbum Externum) + The Sovereign Illumination of the Spirit (Testimonium Spiritus Sancti) ⇓ Spiritual Regeneration and the New Creation (Concursus Divinus)
In the fourth book of the Institutes of the Christian Religion, John Calvin argues that because humanity is spiritually blind by nature, the external proclamation of the Word remains entirely barren on its own.[51] Just as sunlight has no effect upon blind eyes, human preaching produces only empty noise unless the Holy Spirit—the supreme internal teacher (interior magister)—sovereignly opens the heart.[52]
Yet, God is pleased to condescend to use the frail voice of the human proclaimer as His instrument.[53] When an evangelist faithfully heralds the apostolic witness of Scripture, the Holy Spirit sovereignly accompanies the proclamation, penetrating the human soul in an act of divine concursus (concursus divinus).[54] Evangelistic preaching is not a mere transfer of intellectual information; it is the sacred means of grace through which the living, risen Christ personally presents Himself to the hearer.[55]
3. The Dogmatic Status of the Evangelism Explosion (EE) Training Paradigm
This dogmatic foundation provides an exact theological evaluation of modern structured evangelism curricula, such as Evangelism Explosion (EE).
- Harmony of Divine Origin and Instrumental Ministry:
The diagnostic questions, doctrinal summaries, and memorized outlines of the Evangelism Explosion curriculum must never be mistaken for the divine origin (divina origo) of the gospel itself. They function strictly as ministerial instruments (instrumentum ministeriale), mediating the apostolic deposit (paradosis) in an orderly, pedagogical framework.[56]
- Overcoming Technicism and Upholding Pneumatological Sovereignty:
While evangelists must rigorously hone their communicative instruments through disciplined training, they must resist the pragmatic delusion of technique. Rhetorical eloquence cannot regenerate a dead soul. Regeneration is the exclusive prerogative of Christ’s self-revealing power attending the proclaimed Word through the illumination of the Spirit.[57] Disciplined training sharpens the instrument, but life is bestowed exclusively by the Spirit of the living God.[58]
V. Objections and Responses
1. Objection 1: Does Paul’s emphasis on unmediated revelation in Galatians 1:11–12 render human pedagogical transmission and structured evangelistic training (e.g., EE) illegitimate?
- The Opponent’s Argument: Because Paul proclaims that his gospel was "neither received from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ," any reliance on human pedagogical transmission, rote memorization, or structured evangelistic training represents an anthropocentric intrusion that violates the revelatory purity of the gospel.
- Response and Refutation:
This objection commits a category mistake regarding the theological scope of Paul’s antithetical syntax (not A, but B). As Moisés Silva and Seyoon Kim have demonstrated, Paul is repudiating a human source (source) of apostolic authority, not the ministerial role of human pedagogical mediation.[59] Paul explicitly highlights his own transmission of confessional tradition in 1 Corinthians 15:3.[39]
As Calvin perceptively notes, God sent Ananias to lay hands on Paul and instruct him immediately following the unmediated Damascus vision; direct revelation and human instrumentation are not mutually exclusive.[60] Programs such as Evangelism Explosion do not seek to originate revelation; they serve as legitimate ministerial instruments through which the church faithfully transmits the closed apostolic deposit.
2. Objection 2: Following J. D. G. Dunn, was the Damascus experience merely an apostolic commission, with justification by faith developing only as a later polemical byproduct?
- The Opponent’s Argument: As argued by James D. G. Dunn and proponents of the New Perspective on Paul, the Damascus encounter was solely a functional call to evangelize the Gentile world. The systematic doctrine of justification apart from the works of the Law was absent from the encounter and emerged only subsequently from pastoral conflicts in Antioch and Galatia.[9]
- Response and Refutation:
This claim collapses when weighed against the canonical testimony of Galatians 1:15–16 and Philippians 3:7–9. In Galatians 1:16, the clause "to reveal his Son in me" establishes that the Christological revelation and the missional mandate were born simultaneously.[35]
When Paul encountered the crucified Jesus exalted as the sovereign Lord, his foundational premise of self-justification through legalistic zeal collapsed irrevocably. In that instant, the soteriological reality of justification by sovereign grace through faith alone (sola fide) was grasped intuitively.[36] The commission to the Gentiles and the doctrine of justification are organically inseparable; Paul’s gospel possessed its soteriological core from its inception.[37]
3. Objection 3: Does insisting on the finality and cessation of foundational apostolic revelation quench the dynamic ministry of the Holy Spirit in contemporary evangelism?
- The Opponent’s Argument: Restricting the revelatio originaria of Galatians 1:12 to the apostolic era and designating contemporary evangelism as merely derivative proclamation imposes a scholastic rigidity that quenches the dynamic, supernatural presence of the Spirit on the mission field.
- Response and Refutation:
The doctrine of the finality of apostolic revelation does not restrict the Holy Spirit; it provides the indispensable theological bulwark that protects His genuine work. Reformed dogmatics affirms that the Spirit operates indivisibly with the Word (cum verbo) and through the Word (per verbum).[61]
When the evangelist renounces subjective visions and faithfully proclaims the written Word of God, the Holy Spirit sovereignly employs that proclamation to shatter spiritual blindness and impart eternal life—a miracle transcending any temporal sign.[62] Far from stifling the Spirit, affirming the uniqueness of apostolic revelation anchors evangelism in the supreme, living power of the Spirit-illuminated Word.
VI. Conclusion and Practical Theological Implications: The Revelatory Essence of the Gospel and the Grounding of Contemporary Evangelism
1. Summary of Scholarly Findings
Through historical-grammatical exegesis and Reformed dogmatic reflection on Galatians 1:11–12, this study has vindicated the absolute divine origin (divina origo) of the Christian gospel and established its organic integration with the church’s ongoing missional mandate:
- The genitive construct ἀποκάλυψις Ἰησοῦ Χρισ토ῦ in Galatians 1:12 functions as a plenary genitive denoting an objective, eschatological Christophany. In this event, the resurrected Christ revealed Himself as both the sovereign Subject and the material Content of the gospel, bringing the Abrahamic covenant to its cosmic, redemptive-historical fulfillment.
- The unrepeatable, foundational revelation granted to the apostles (revelatio originaria) does not undermine the church’s public tradition (paradosis); rather, tradition functions as the subordinate, ministerial vehicle for preserving and proclaiming that definitive deposit.
- Evangelistic proclamation is not human rhetorical coercion, but an eschatological act wherein the Triune God mediates salvation through the external Word (verbum externum) accompanied by the internal testimony and illumination of the Holy Spirit (illuminatio Spiritus Sancti).
2. Practical Directives for Evangelism Explosion Training and Commencement Preaching
The dogmatic conclusions of this treatise yield vital homiletical and practical directives for the commissioning of the local church in its evangelistic calling:
- First, Recovering the Sacred Dignity of Evangelism (From Salesmanship to Divine Ambassadorship):
Evangelism must never be degraded into commercial salesmanship, psychological manipulation, or institutional recruitment. It is a sacred ambassadorship wherein the exalted Lord Jesus Christ condescends to speak through the clay lips of the proclaimer. The evangelist is not a commercial promoter, but a consecrated witness to the divine revelation of the Son of God.
- Second, Harmonizing Pedagogical Discipline with the Revelatory Flame:
The structured outlines, diagnostic questions, and scriptural memorization of Evangelism Explosion correspond to the kerygmatic tradition (paradosis) of 1 Corinthians 15:3; they constitute the "clean lampstand" designed to hold the light without distortion. Yet, it is not the lampstand that illuminates the room, but the "revelatory flame of Christ" burning within it. The church must train its workers with utmost diligence while cultivating profound, prayerful dependence upon the sovereign moving of the Holy Spirit.
- Third, Cultivating Covenantal Assurance and Apostolic Boldness:
As established in Galatians 1:15–16, the sovereign grace that opened our eyes to the glory of Christ is the very grace that commissions us to the nations. The evangelist need not succumb to despondency before the moral hardness of the culture or personal inadequacy. Grounded in the self-authenticating power of the gospel and the invincible efficacy of the Holy Spirit, the church must step boldly into the world, bearing witness to the living, reigning King.

Historical-Grammatical Exegesis
The Divine Origin (Divina Origo) of the Gospel and Foundational Apostolic Revelation: A Historical-Grammatical Exegesis of Galatians 1:11–12 and an Evangelistic Theology of the Means of Grace (Media Gratiae)
I. Introduction: The Clash Over the Origin of the Gospel in First-Century Galatia and the Crisis of Contemporary Evangelism
1. Research Background and Problem Formulation
Within the corpus of early Christian epistolography, few texts vibrate with such palpable theological and historical friction over the origin (origo) of the gospel and the legitimacy of apostolic authority as Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians.1 The agitators who infiltrated the Galatian congregations—frequently identified as Judaizing counter-missionaries—launched a systematic assault upon Paul's apostolic credentials in order to subvert the divine authority and uniqueness of his message. Their critical thesis was as sharp as it was polemical: Paul was, at best, a derivative, second-tier apostle or a mere human broker who had received an incomplete tradition from the primary pillars in Jerusalem (Peter, James, and John). Consequently, they alleged that his law-free, circumcision-free proclamation to the Gentiles was an accommodating, human contrivance (κατὰ ἄνθρωπον), tailored to curry favor by excising the rigorous demands of covenantal nomism.2
Faced with this existential threat to the integrity of the gospel, Paul pointedly dispenses with the customary epistolary thanksgiving and polite prescripts (Gal 1:1–10), issuing instead an uncompromising, double-voiced curse (anathema, ἀνάθεμα). Immediately following this rhetorical thunderclap, he articulates the programmatic thesis statement of the entire epistle in Galatians 1:11–12.3 Here, the apostle solemnly declares that the gospel proclaimed by him "is not according to man (οὐκ ἔστιν κατὰ ἄνθρωπον)," for he "neither received it from man nor was taught it (οὐδὲ γὰρ ἐgὼ παρὰ ἀνθρώπου παρέλαβον αὐτὸ οὔτε ἐδιδάχθην)," but received it directly "through a revelation of Jesus Christ (ἀλλὰ δι’ ἀποκαλύψεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ)."4
This profound assertion has long occupied the epicenter of critical Pauline scholarship and dogmatic debate. A primary exegetical crux concerns the apparent intertextual tension between Galatians 1:12 and 1 Corinthians 15:3: How can Paul's categorical disavowal of human mediation ("neither received it from man," οὐδὲ παρὰ ἀνθρώπου παρέλαβον) be reconciled with his explicit acknowledgment of receiving and transmitting the public confessional tradition of the primitive church ("what I also received," ὃ καὶ παρέλαβον; "I delivered to you," παρέδωκα)?5 Furthermore, scholars remain deeply divided over whether the genitive construction "the revelation of Jesus Christ (ἀποκάλυψις Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ)" denotes an interior, mystical vision or an objective, eschatological, and cosmic intrusion of the New Creation into the theater of redemptive history.6
This exegetical divide directly mirrors a debilitating crisis in contemporary pastoral and evangelistic practice. Modern evangelism oscillates dangerously between two unbiblical extremes: on the one hand, a technical secularization that reduces the proclamation of the gospel to rhetorical manipulation, psychological salesmanship, or pragmatic church-growth marketing; and on the other hand, an unmoored, enthusiastic mysticism that disparages rigorous training and public apostolic tradition in pursuit of direct, subjective spiritual encounters. For practitioners committed to systematic training—such as the discipline of Evangelism Explosion (EE)—Galatians 1:11–12 provides an indispensable theological bulwark. It establishes that the ontological essence of evangelism resides neither in human pedagogical acquisition (didaskō) nor in sophisticated oratorical technique, but in the intrinsic, supernatural revelatory power (apokalypsis) of the gospel itself, grounded in the sovereign self-witness of the risen Christ.7
2. Survey of Prior Research and Academic Trajectories
In contemporary Pauline studies, the interpretation of Galatians 1:11–12 broadly crystallizes around three distinct scholarly paradigms:
First, the Apocalyptic Paul school, pioneered by J. Louis Martyn and further developed by Susan Grove Eastman, construes Galatians 1:11–16 as an irreducible theological antinomy between the "human activity of traditioning" and the "divine activity of apocalypse."8 For Martyn and Eastman, apokalypsis signifies a radical, vertical "divine invasion" that breaks catastrophically into the cosmos, utterly obliterating all prior religious, historical, and traditional human epistemologies. In this reading, discontinuity is radicalized to the near-total eclipse of redemptive-historical continuity.9
Second, proponents of the New Perspective on Paul, represented preeminently by James D. G. Dunn, sharply circumscribe the Damascus encounter to a functional "apostolic commission" for the Gentile mission.10 Dunn argues that a fully formed soteriology of justification by faith apart from the works of the law did not emerge on the Damascus road; rather, it was formulated retrospectively some fifteen to seventeen years later as an ex post facto polemical weapon forged in the crucible of pastoral conflicts at Antioch and Galatia.11
Third, in robust contrast to both radical apocalyptic severance and New Perspective functionalism, confessional evangelical scholarship and historic Reformed orthodoxy (championed by Douglas J. Moo, Moisés Silva, Seyoon Kim, G. K. Beale, N. T. Wright, Gerald O'Collins, Philippe H. Menoud, and Peter Fraenkel) demonstrate the organic and complementary unity between divine revelation and apostolic tradition.12 These scholars cogently demonstrate that the Damascus Christophany imparted the seminal, theological core of justification by faith in nuce, while the public tradition of the church operates as the Spirit-ordained historical instrument that confirms, preserves, and articulates this foundation.13
3. Core Theses of the Study
Grounded in a meticulous historical-grammatical exegesis of Galatians 1:11–12 and contextualized within Second Temple Judaism and early church history, this study advances the following four interrelated theses:
1. Thesis 1 (The Subversion of Rabbinic Traditio and the Divine Origin /Divina Origo/):
Paul's strategic deployment of the three negative markers in 1:11–12 (κατὰ ἄνθρωπον, παρὰ ἀνθρώπου παρέλαβον, ἐδιδάχθην) deliberately subverts and deconstructs the Second Temple rabbinic pedagogical paradigm of master-to-disciple oral transmission (the qibbel/masar succession chain codified in Mishnah Abot 1:1). The gospel is thereby established as possessing an absolute divine origin (divina origo), free from human invention or scholastic pedigree.
2. Thesis 2 (The Plenary Genitive and the Revelatory Antecedence of Justification):
The pivotal genitive phrase "revelation of Jesus Christ (δι’ ἀποκαλύψεως Ἰησοῦ Χρισ토ῦ)" in 1:12 must be parsed syntactically as a "plenary genitive," embracing both Christ as the sovereign agent of revelation (subjective genitive) and Christ as its consummate, objective content (objective genitive). The Damascus Christophany was not merely an external commission to labor among the Gentiles; it was an objective disclosure of the glorified Son that radically shattered all Torah-righteousness and implanted the foundational architecture of justification by faith in embryonic completeness.
3. Thesis 3 (The Epochal Distinction between Foundational Apostolic Revelation and Internal Illumination):
The apokalypsis granted to Paul on the Damascus road represents a singular, unrepeatable, and canonically normative foundational revelation (revelatio originaria). In sharp contrast, the spiritual event occurring in contemporary evangelistic proclamation is not the reception of new, unmediated revelation, but the inward illumination and witness of the Holy Spirit (illuminatio/testimonium Spiritus Sancti internum) operating upon and through the written Word (verbum scriptum) and the dependent, apostolic deposit (dependent revelation).
4. Thesis 4 (The Inseparability of the External Means of Grace and Apostolic Commission):
The reception of revelation is indivisibly tethered to missionary commissioning to the nations (Gal 1:15–16). Structured evangelistic frameworks—exemplified by Evangelism Explosion—are therefore not human oratorical manipulations (kata anthropon), but legitimate external instruments of ministerial grace (media gratiae externa / instrumentum ministeriale). When deployed in fidelity to the apostolic deposit, the Holy Spirit sovereignly concurs (concursus divinus) with the herald’s oral proclamation to actualize regenerating power in the hearer.
II. Historical-Grammatical Exegesis and Theological Argumentation of Galatians 1:11–12
1. Exegesis of the Negative Formulations and the Deconstruction of the Rabbinic Traditio-Chain (Gal 1:11–12a)
(1) Γνωρίζω as a Solemn Epistolary Disclosure Formula
Paul inaugurates verse 11 with the weighty formula Γνωρίζω δὲ ὑμῖν, ἀδελφοί ("For I make known to you, brothers"). In Hellenistic epistolary rhetoric, γνωρίζω transcends the pedestrian conveyance of private information; it functions as a formal, legal, and theological disclosure formula employed when a writer asserts public authority to promulgate an incontrovertible truth.14 By addressing the wavering Galatians as "brothers (ἀδελφοί)," Paul tempers his polemical indignation with pastoral affection, binding the recipients in spiritual solidarity while underscoring the forensic solemnity of the thesis he is about to enunciate.15
(2) The Threefold Negation: Barring Every Avenue of Human Origin
To vindicate the divine origin of the gospel he proclaimed (τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τὸ εὐαγγελισθὲν ὑπ’ ἐμοῦ), Paul structures verses 11–12 into an artful, crescendoing pattern of "Not A, Nor B, Nor C, But D":16
A. οὐκ ἔστιν κατὰ ἄνθρωπον (it is not according to man / v. 11) B. οὐδὲ γὰρ ἐγὼ παρὰ ἀνθρώπου παρέλαβον αὐτὸ (for neither did I receive it from man / v. 12a) C. οὔτε ἐδιδάχθην (nor was I taught it / v. 12b) D. ἀλλὰ δι’ ἀποκαλύψεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ / v. 12c)
First, in the phrase οὐκ ἔστιν κατὰ ἄνθρωπον, the preposition κατά governing the accusative signifies standard, measure, or origin: "according to a human norm" or "of human contrivance."17 As N. T. Wright incisively observes, Paul’s gospel is not a philosophical fabrication or a religious product fashioned by human intellect to satisfy anthropocentric desires or cultural expectations; it does not conform to human categories of wisdom.18
Second, the phrase παρὰ ἀνθρώπου in verse 12a explicitly targets the source and intermediary agency of the message. The preposition παρά with the genitive denotes the ultimate point of origin or personal mediation. Paul categorically repudiates the charge that any human being, ecclesiastic council, or apostolic institution stood as the progenitor or conduit of his gospel message.19
Third, the pairing of the verbs παρέλαβον and ἐδιδάχθην directly challenges the institutional bedrock of Second Temple rabbinic scholasticism. The foundational treatise of the rabbinic oral tradition, Mishnah Abot 1:1, conceptualizes the legitimacy of religious knowledge as an unbroken transmission chain:
> "Moses received (qibbel, קִבֵּל = paralambanō) the Torah from Sinai and committed it (masar, מָסַר = paradidōmi) to Joshua, and Joshua to the elders, and the elders to the prophets, and the prophets committed it to the men of the Great Synagogue."20
In the rabbinic paradigm, orthodoxy and authority were entirely conditional upon a disciple faithfully "receiving (paralambanō)" the oral tradition (paradosis) from a recognized master and being formally "taught (didaskō)" within the confines of an established academy (such as the school of Gamaliel).21 As William Hendriksen astutely notes, by denying that his gospel was acquired through pedagogical instruction or human succession, Paul decisively decouples the authority of his message from the endorsement of any terrestrial chain of tradition.22
As Peter Fraenkel demonstrates in his seminal analysis of Philip Melanchthon's theology, the gospel—unlike the natural moral law inscribed upon the conscience and creation—is an unsearchable divine mystery (divine mystery) originating solely from the secret council of God (ex arcana sede) and disclosed exclusively through Christ.23 Paul thereby draws an impassable boundary between the mutable statutes of human contrivance (Menschen-satzungen) and the immutable, uncreated deposit of divine revelation.24
2. The Syntax of the "Revelation of Jesus Christ" (ἀποκάλυψις Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ) and the Revelatory Antecedence of Justification (Gal 1:12b)
(1) Grammatical Resolution: The Plenary Genitive
The climactic positive affirmation in verse 12c, ἀλλὰ δι’ ἀποκαλύψεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, features the genitive construct Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, which has ignited extensive grammatical deliberation:25
- Objective Genitive: In this reading, Jesus Christ is the object and primary content revealed. This finds compelling support in the parallel phrasing of Galatians 1:16a, where God is pleased "to reveal his Son in me (
ἀποκαλύψαι τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ ἐν ἐμοί)."26 - Subjective Genitive: Emphasized by Daniel B. Wallace, this reading views the exalted Christ as the personal, active agent who bestowed the revelation upon Paul. This corresponds structurally with Galatians 1:1, where Paul’s apostleship is derived "through Jesus Christ and God the Father (
Synthesizing the insights of Richard N. Longenecker, Hans Dieter Betz, and Thomas R. Schreiner, this grammatical tension is best resolved by recognizing the construction as a Plenary Genitive.28 In the sovereign economy of the Damascus encounter, Jesus Christ cannot be compartmentalized into an either/or grammatical category: He is simultaneously the divine Agent who authoritatively unveils the mystery, and the living, incarnate, crucified, and risen Reality who constitutes the sum and substance of the gospel proclaimed.29
(2) Ἀποκάλυψις as Visual Christophany and Eschatological New Creation
As Chang-Lak Kim rightly contends, the root meaning of ἀποκάλυψις in Hellenistic and biblical Greek is not an abstract ideological illumination, but an ocular, historical unveiling—a visible manifestation or Christophany.30 This corresponds precisely with Paul’s autobiographical reflections elsewhere, where he grounds his apostolic legitimacy in an objective sensory encounter: "Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? (οὐχὶ Ἰησοῦν τὸν κύριον ἡμῶν ἑόρακα; 1 Cor 9:1)" and "Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me (ὤφθη κἀμοί, 1 Cor 15:8)."31
Furthermore, G. K. Beale observes that across the New Testament, the exact phrase "the revelation of Jesus Christ (ἀποκάλυψις Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ)" typically denotes the eschatological Parousia—the consummating apocalypse of Christ in glory (1 Cor 1:7; 2 Thess 1:7; 1 Pet 1:7; Rev 1:1).32 By appropriating this technical eschatological vocabulary to designate his own conversion/call, Paul implies that the eschatological Day of the Lord has broken into the middle of history. The resurrected Messiah, who will consummately judge and renew the cosmos at the end of time, proleptically invaded the present space-time continuum on the Damascus road to arrest the persecutor.33 Hence, the gospel revelation is not a progressive maturation of human religious consciousness, but the sovereign dawn of the New Creation, shattering the dominion of "the present evil age (ὁ αἰὼν ὁ ἐνεστὼς πονηρός, Gal 1:4)."34
(3) The "Revelatory Antecedence" of Justification: Seyoon Kim versus James D. G. Dunn
James D. G. Dunn’s New Perspective thesis reduces the Damascus encounter to a bare, functional commissioning to preach to the Gentiles, asserting that the doctrine of justification by faith apart from legal observance was completely absent at Damascus and only materialized over a decade later in response to the tactical exigencies of the Antioch and Galatian crises.35
However, as Seyoon Kim has conclusively demonstrated, the fundamental architecture of Paul’s doctrine of justification was already organically present within the Damascus Christophany.36
- When Saul the Pharisee beheld the crucified Jesus vindicated in divine shekinah glory, his entire world of nomistic zeal collapsed. He realized instantaneously that the righteousness he had meticulously pursued under the Torah was not divine merit, but blasphemous rebellion against God's appointed Messiah.37
- In that single visionary collision, Paul recognized that if the one who hung on a tree under the curse of the law (Deut 21:23; Gal 3:13) was indeed vindicated as the risen Kyrios, then the Torah had ceased to function as the arbiter of life and righteousness. Divine righteousness (dikaiosynē theou) could therefore be granted exclusively as an unmerited gift through faith in the crucified and risen Christ.38
Thus, missionary commission and soteriological revelation are not disparate, chronologically detached phenomena; they represent the unified, indivisible fruit of the Damascus Christophany.39
3. The Redemptive-Historical Integration of Foundational Apostolic Revelation (Wipf and Stock, 2010) and Ecclesiastical Tradition (Paradosis)
(1) Foundational Revelation versus Dependent Revelation
From a Reformed dogmatic perspective, John Calvin correctly underscores that the apokalypsis of Galatians 1:11–12 cannot be generalized as a normative, ongoing paradigm for every believer. Rather, it belongs to the redemptive-historical category of unrepeatable, foundational apostolic revelation (revelatio originaria) designed to inaugurate the New Covenant and establish the apostolic bedrock of the church.40
The systematician Gerald O'Collins clarifies this through a crucial distinction between "Foundational Revelation" and "Dependent Revelation":41
- Foundational Revelation (Wipf and Stock, 2010): Encompasses the unique, constitutive epoch of redemptive history culminating in the incarnation, passion, resurrection of Christ, and the appearances granted to the apostles, closing decisively with the apostolic age.
- Dependent Revelation and Tradition (revelatio dependens / traditio): Following the close of the canon, the church does not receive new constitutive revelations. Instead, through the ongoing ministry of the Word and the internal testimony of the Spirit, the church faithfully conserves, transmits (traditio), and expounds that original deposit, continually encountering the living presence of the risen Lord (Christus praesens).42
As Michael J. McClymond observes in his analysis of Jonathan Edwards, direct visions, audible voices, and supernatural inspirations were extraordinary dispensations granted to patriarchs, prophets, and apostles precisely to generate sacred Scripture; once the canon of revelation is complete, God communicates through the "ordinary means" of the written text illumined by the Holy Spirit.43 To project Galatians 1:12 uncritically into the modern church as a warrant for ongoing, extra-biblical revelations is a catastrophic, enthusiast error that destabilizes the finality of the canon.44
(2) Intertextual Coherence Between 1 Corinthians 15:3 and Galatians 1:12: The Menoud-Kim Synthesis
Philippe H. Menoud provides a vital hermeneutical key for harmonizing Paul's apparent disavowal of tradition in Galatians 1:12 with his explicit reliance upon tradition in 1 Corinthians 15:3:45
> "The gospel which Paul received by revelation from on high is at the same time a historical reality and the subject of tradition (tradition). The Apostle would have rejected with indignation the modern interpretation that makes him the founder of Christianity. Paul was profoundly conscious that by the Holy Spirit he had been inserted into a historical development anterior to his own conversion."46
In 1 Corinthians 15:3, Paul cites a primitive confession using the technical rabbinic terminology of transmission: "For I delivered to you (παρέδωκα) as of first importance what I also received (παρέλαβον)."47 As both Seyoon Kim and David E. Garland demonstrate, this reflects the two complementary dimensions of the apostolic gospel:48
- Galatians 1:11–12 (The Soteriological Truth of the Gospel /Veritas Evangelii/): The transcendent meaning, theological efficacy, and divine authority of Christ's cross and resurrection—specifically, that Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to all who believe—were revealed directly to Paul by Christ without human tutelage.
- 1 Corinthians 15:3–5 (The Historical Facts and Confessional Formulary /Facta et Formae/): The chronological details of Jesus' earthly death, burial, third-day resurrection according to the Scriptures, and the historical catalog of eyewitness appearances (to Cephas, the Twelve, the five hundred, and James) were historical data which Paul received via early Christian tradition, notably during his initial post-conversion visit to Jerusalem (Gal 1:18–19).49
Just as in Jewish theology the foundational Sinai revelation was faithfully mediated through generations via communal oral transmission (Norman Solomon), so in the Christian economy the unrepeatable apostolic revelation is organically safeguarded, proclaimed, and transmitted across space and time within the public tradition of the church (regula fidei).50
4. The External Means of Grace (Media Gratiae Externa) and the Simultaneity of the Apostolic Commission (Gal 1:15–16)
As Douglas J. Moo and James D. G. Dunn contend with compelling textual evidence, in the biographical consciousness of Paul, conversion and commissioning were completely fused: "Conversion and commission came together."51
In Galatians 1:15–16, Paul portrays his interior revelation in terms heavily freighted with prophetic commissioning imagery from the Old Testament:
> "But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son in me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles (ἵνα εὐαγγελίζωμαι αὐτὸν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν)..." (Gal 1:15–16a)
(1) Intertextuality with the Prophetic "Servant of Yahweh"
Paul’s phrasing, "set me apart before I was born (ὁ ἀφορίσας με ἐκ κοιλίας μητρός μου)," directly echoes the septuagintal descriptions of the Servant of Yahweh in Isaiah 49:1 (ἐκ κοιλίας μητρός μου) and the call of Jeremiah in Jeremiah 1:5 (πρὸ τοῦ με πλάσαι ἐν κοιλίᾳ... ἡγίακά σε).52 Furthermore, the purpose clause "that I might preach him among the Gentiles" unmistakably mirrors the Servant’s mandate in Isaiah 49:6 to be a "light to the nations (εἰς φῶς ἐθνῶν)."53 Paul understood his apostolic vocation as an eschatological participation in the mission of the Suffering Servant of the Lord.54
(2) The Telic ἵνα and the Missionary Dynamic of Revelation
The purpose marker ἵνα ("in order that") in verse 16 explicitly governs the divine unveiling: God revealed His Son in Paul for the sole, sovereign purpose "that I might preach him among the Gentiles (εὐαγγελίζωμαι)."55 Divine revelation is inherently missional; it cannot be hoarded as a cloistered mystical luxury, for its ontological trajectory is an outward, centrifugal explosion into worldwide proclamation.56
(3) First-Century Orality and the Theology of the Means of Grace (Media Gratiae)
Drawing upon Peter Fraenkel’s formulation of the Reformers’ ecclesiology, God has ordained the ministerial office and the public, vocal proclamation of the Word (ministerium verbi / praedicatio) as the primary means through which the doctrine of the gospel (doctrina) is mediated to the nations.57 God does not operate in a pneumatic vacuum detached from physical reality; rather, He employs the external verbal witness (verbum externum) of human ambassadors as the consecrated instrument through which the Holy Spirit operates regeneratively (concursus divinus).58
In the Greco-Roman world, the oral proclamation of an imperial herald (keryx) carried the full, immediate judicial weight and authority of the reigning monarch. Similarly, the apostolic proclamation of the gospel, voiced by a human messenger, operates as the very locus where the Word of God exerts its living, supernatural power, received "not as the word of men, but as what it really is, the word of God (1 Thess 2:13)."59 Viewed from this perspective, the systematic gospel outline and rigorous pedagogical training utilized by movements such as Evangelism Explosion do not constitute human manipulation (kata anthropon); they function as an external ministerial instrument of grace (instrumentum ministeriale / media gratiae externa), designed to transmit the apostolic deposit with purity, clarity, and fidelity.60
III. Objections and Responses
1. Objection 1: Does the Revelation in Galatians 1:11–12 Constitute an Antinomic Rupture that Annihilates Covenantal History and Ecclesiastical Tradition?
- Opponents' Argument: Radical apocalyptic interpreters, notably J. Louis Martyn, argue that Paul’s assertions in Galatians 1:11–12 signify an absolute, catastrophic rupture with all human forms of traditioning (
traditioning). In their view, apokalypsis is an unmediated vertical invasion that renders all prior covenant history, ecclesiastical structures, and means of grace obsolete, reducing them to the status of fleshly, human "religion."61 - Response and Refutation:
This hyper-apocalyptic dualism falters upon both epistolary rhetoric and the broader canvas of Pauline theology. As N. T. Wright, John Barclay, and Philippe Menoud demonstrate, apocalyptic revelation for Paul is not the abolition of Israel's covenant history, but its long-awaited covenantal climax and fulfillment (Covenantal Fulfilment).62
In 1 Corinthians 15:3–4, Paul emphatically anchors the gospel in the fact that Christ died and rose "in accordance with the Scriptures (κατὰ τὰς γραφάς)."63 In Galatians, Paul’s polemical denial of human agency (parà anthrōpou) is dictated by the urgent necessity of liberating the Gentile churches from the yoke of the Sinaitic covenant and rabbinic additions.64 Apocalypse does not annihilate historical tradition; rather, it unveils the true redemptive-historical telos of the promises made to Abraham, thereby validating and stabilizing the true traditio of the church.65
2. Objection 2: Was the Damascus Christophany Merely an Apostolic Commission, with Justification Being an Ex Post Facto Pastoral Formulation?
- Opponents' Argument: Proponents of the New Perspective on Paul, echoing James D. G. Dunn, maintain that Paul received only a generic mandate to evangelize the Gentiles at Damascus, and that the sophisticated doctrine of justification by faith apart from Torah works was an ad hoc, pragmatic formulation generated years later during the Antioch crisis and Galatian controversy.66
- Response and Refutation:
This hypothesis is exegetically untenable when weighed against Galatians 1:15–16 and Philippians 3:7–9. Galatians 1:16 states that God was pleased to "reveal his Son in me"—a formulation denoting an internal, profound Christological and soteriological revelation, not a mere external job description.67
As Seyoon Kim has convincingly demonstrated, the visual reality of the glorified Jesus at once demolished Paul's confidence in legal righteousness and disclosed that the Crucified One had fully absorbed the curse of the law, thereby inaugurating the divine righteousness (dikaiosynē theou) given freely to faith.68 Furthermore, as Douglas Moo demonstrates, Paul's conversion and commissioning were indissolubly simultaneous.69 The doctrine of justification by faith was therefore not a delayed tactical expedient, but the direct theological core born out of the Damascus Christophany.
3. Objection 3: Does the Emphasis on Unmediated Revelation Invalidate Structured Evangelistic Training (e.g., Evangelism Explosion)?
- Opponents' Argument: If Paul’s gospel was neither received from man nor taught by man, but derived solely through supernatural revelation, then any systematic, humanly taught evangelistic curriculum (such as the diagnostic questions and structured outlines of Evangelism Explosion) is fundamentally illegitimate, since conversion must depend exclusively on sovereign, mystical revelation.
- Response and Refutation:
This objection commits a severe category error by conflating unique apostolic foundational revelation with the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit. As Gerald O'Collins and Michael McClymond emphasize, Paul’s experience on the Damascus road was a singular, canonical event of foundational revelation (revelatio originaria). What occurs in contemporary evangelism is the inward illumination of the Holy Spirit (illuminatio) applying the inscripturated apostolic deposit to the sinner's heart.70
As John Calvin repeatedly asserts, God is pleased to use the vocal ministry of human heralds as His cooperative instruments.71 Evangelistic curricula like Evangelism Explosion do not seek to supplant divine revelation; rather, they serve as refined ministerial instruments of grace (instrumentum ministeriale), equipping believers to handle and articulate the apostolic deposit with precision and clarity.72 By preparing the vessel while resting entirely upon the Holy Spirit to ignite the spark of regeneration, structured evangelism escapes both mechanical technicism and passive, quietistic enthusiasm.73
IV. Conclusion and Practical-Theological Implications: The Revelatory Essence of the Gospel and the Refounding of Contemporary Evangelism
1. Synthesis of Scholarly Findings
Through a rigorous historical-grammatical exegesis of Galatians 1:11–12 set within its historical and theological contexts, this investigation has established the divine origin (divina origo) of the gospel and its organic integration with apostolic tradition:
1. The threefold negative syntax of Galatians 1:11–12 dismantling the rabbinic transmission paradigm (paralambanō/didaskō) demonstrates that the gospel is not an anthropocentric contrivance, but an uncreated, transcendent deposit from God.
2. The phrase "revelation of Jesus Christ" constitutes a plenary genitive, wherein the risen Christ is simultaneously the sovereign Agent and the supreme Content of the revelation, imparting the essential core of justification by faith in nuce at Damascus.
3. The revelation granted to Paul was a singular, foundational revelation (revelatio originaria) that established the apostolic foundation of the church; contemporary evangelism consists in the faithful transmission of this deposit illumined by the Holy Spirit (illuminatio).
4. Revelation and missionary commission are indissolubly fused (Gal 1:15–16), establishing that the church’s vocal proclamation and pedagogical training function as sanctified external means of grace (media gratiae externa) animated by divine concurrence (concursus divinus).
2. Biblical and Practical Mandates for Evangelism Explosion Training and Ecclesial Proclamation
The conclusions of this study yield three profound pastoral directives for the local church and for the inauguration of systematic evangelism training ministries:
- First, A Paradigm Shift from Human Rhetorical Coercion to Pneumatological Sovereignty:
Evangelistic proclamation must never be degraded into a high-pressure sales pitch or psychological manipulation (kata anthropon).74 Memorized outlines and diagnostic questions are noble pedagogical instruments, but they possess zero intrinsic power to regenerate a dead soul or illuminate blinded eyes. That miracle belongs sovereignly and exclusively to the living Christ operating through the internal testimony of the Holy Spirit. The evangelist is not a technician selling a product, but an eschatological herald bearing witness to the risen King.
- Second, The Restoration of the Dignity of Training as an External Means of Grace:
Far from being a carnally minded enterprise, rigorous evangelistic training participates in the dignity of the apostolic paradosis (1 Cor 15:3). It constructs an accurate, disciplined vessel designed to convey the glorious realities of Christ's substitutionary atonement and bodily resurrection without distortion.75 The herald polishes the instrument with all diligence, yet places all faith not in the instrument, but in the divine fire of the Word conveyed through it (media gratiae).
- Third, The Recovery of an Eschatological Consciousness of Commission and Holy Boldness:
As witnessed in Galatians 1:15–16, the reality that God has unveiled His Son in our hearts through the gospel is itself our irrevocable divine mandate to proclaim Him (euangelizomai) to the surrounding world.76 Evangelism is not the peripheral hobby of a specialized few, but the supreme covenantal vocation of every redeemed believer who has tasted the unmerited grace of justification.
The message we bear to the world is no human myth, nor is it a sterile philosophy acquired in the academies of this age. It is the unshakeable, eternal revelation of the living God, torn open before the cosmos in the bloody cross and empty tomb of His beloved Son. Convinced of this divine origin, contemporary heralds may advance with holy boldness, confident that wherever the apostolic gospel is faithfully proclaimed, the Holy Spirit will sovereignly unleash His supernatural power to raise the spiritually dead to everlasting life.

(Douglas J. Moo) | A Theology of Paul and His Letters (2021) | 갈 1:12의 계시(apokalypsis)는 그리스도의 신적 나타나심에 뿌리를 두며, 바울은 다른 사도들로부터 그리스도에 관한 '역사적 사실들(truths)'을 들었을지라도 그 '참됨(truth)'에 대한 구원론적 확신은 부활하신 주님의 직수 계시로 수납함. | 보완 / 지지 (전승 수용과 계시의 관계를 '사실' 대 '확신'으로 구별하여 사도적 독립성을 증명) | "We can resolve this tension if we read Paul as claiming that he was taught 'truths' about Christ and the gospel by others, but that he was convinced of the 'truth' of these matters because he had himself encountered the risen Christ." |
| 반박 / 대립각 (전승과 계시의 완만한 연속성을 거부하고, 인간의 매개와 타협을 원천 배제하는 종말론적 단절성 강조) | "Paul's tendency to refer to antinomies... in the form of the human activity of traditioning versus the divine activity of apocalypse to the gospel itself (1:11-16)." |
| 지지 (전도폭발 훈련생들에게 전도가 단순한 기술 습득이 아닌 종말론적 파송임을 입증) | "Since this phrase in Gal. 1:12 ('an apocalypse of Jesus Christ') occurs elsewhere in the NT only in reference to Christ’s final coming... it suggests that Gal. 1:12 is saying that Christ was revealed to Paul in the form in which he will come at the end of time..." |
| 제임스 D. G. 던 (James D. G. Dunn) | The Theology of Paul the Apostle (2006) | 바울이 계시로 받았다고 주창한 복음의 독창적 핵심은 "모세 율법이나 할례 없이 이방인에게 복음이 거저 제공되어야 한다"는 신적 소명이며, 바울의 사도권은 복음의 진리 아래 종속됨. | 지지 / 보완 (바울이 받은 계시의 구체적 본질이 곧 '조건 없는 이방인 전도/선교'였음을 규명) | "What Paul was convinced of on the Damascus road... was that this Jesus was now to be preached to the Gentiles. It is this latter point which Paul focuses on in his own most explicit reference to his conversion..." |
| 보완 (전도자가 전하는 메시지 안에서 역사적 십자가 사건과 신적 계시 해석의 결합 구조를 제공) | "In 1 Cor. 15:3–5, however, Paul is speaking only about the facts surrounding Jesus’ death and resurrection... In Gal. 1:11–12, he does not have in view the historical details... but the interpretation of what those facts mean." |
| 대니얼 B. 월리스 (Daniel B. Wallace) | The Basics of New Testament Syntax (2009) | 갈 1:12의 '예수 그리스도의 계시(apokalypsis Iēsou Christou)' 구문에서 속격은 '예수 그리스도께서 주체가 되어 친히 보여주신 계시'를 뜻하는 주격 속격(Subjective Genitive)임. 'revelation of Christ' can be unpacked to mean 'the revelation about Christ' or 'the revelation from Christ'... Subjective Genitive." |
(Summary of Debates)

(Propositional Statements)
바울은 갈라디아서 1장 11-12절에서 정교하게 배치된 부정 구문("Not A, Nor B, Nor C, But D")을 사용하여 자신의 복음이 가닌 비인간적 성격과 신적 출처를 명증한다.[6]
(Christophanie)
III.
(Mother/Confirmation)
(Autopistia)
(Objections and Responses)
- 응답: 이 반론은 바울의 수사학적 부정 구문(not A, but B)의 범주를 오해한 것이다.

(Numbered Theses)
(Shattering of Rabbinic Traditio):
(Plenary Genitive & Christophany):
(Complementarity of Revelation and Tradition):
(Inseparability of Apocalypse and Commission):
(Not A, Nor B, Nor C, But D)"의 수사학적 구조를 구축한다:[10]
III. (Objections and Responses)

1:11-12 A defense, nevertheless, has to be offered. So the summary in verses 11 and 12 highlights the difference between himself and his rivals: his gospel was not a merely human construction. Verse 11, beginning with the solemn gnōrizō hymin (“Let me make it clear to you, literally "I would have you know"), nearly repeats the point made in verse 1, though there it was Paul's apostleship that was "not through a human (oude di anthrōpou) while here it is his gospel that is not kata anthropon, “in accordance with human(s)": in other words, something he concocted for himself, "a mere human invention.

A New Testament Biblical Theology: The Unfolding of the Old Testament in the New | G. K. Beale | "It is described as an “apocalypse” of Christ to Paul of the exalted Son of God (Gal. 1:12, 16). Since this phrase in Gal. 1:12 (“an apocalypse of Jesus Christ”) occurs elsewhere in the NT only in reference to Christ’s final coming (1 Cor. 1:7; 2 Thess. 1:7; 1 Pet. 1:7, 13; Rev. 1:1),84 it suggests that Gal. 1:12 is saying that Christ was revealed to Paul in the form in which he will come at the end of time—his exalted, reigning, resurrected new-creational form. This is a classic example of the eschatological future breaking back into the present, making the present an eschatological time." A New Testament Biblical Theology: The Unfolding of the Old Testament in the New | G. K. Beale | "The commissioning aspect of Paul’s Damascus Road experience is highlighted in 1 Cor. 9:1; 15:1–11, and, of course, as we have seen in the preceding chapter, the call is underscored in the Acts 26 narrative. It was a verbal commission, since it was on a par with the other resurrection appearances to the other apostles. The other apostles also all received their commission through a resurrection appearance of Christ.86 In this apostolic call Paul saw himself as a latter-day Isaiah and Jeremiah who was to be the Messiah’s prophet of light to the nations, which is expressed through allusions to Jer. 1:5 and Isa. 49:1–6 together in Gal. 1:15: “But when God, who had set me apart even from my mother’s womb and called me. . . .”" A New Testament Biblical Theology: The Unfolding of the Old Testament in the New | G. K. Beale | "The Damascus Road Christophany constituted both Paul’s regenerative understanding of the gospel (as a result of conversion) and his apostolic commission to the gentiles. In this regard, note again Gal. 1:16: (1) “to reveal His Son in me” and (2) “I might preach Him among the Gentiles.”" A Theology of Paul and His Letters: The Gift of the New Realm in Christ | Douglas J. Moo | "When God revealed his Son to Paul, he was both converted and called: “Conversion and commission came together."16 As John M. G. Barclay put it, "As a believer, Paul is a 'Jew' who (in his terms) no longer remains 'in Judaism' his ethnicity has not been renounced but subsumed within an identity and an allegiance governed by the event of Christ. 17" A Theology of Paul and His Letters: The Gift of the New Realm in Christ | Douglas J. Moo | "Especially important is Paul's use of the language of “revelation (apokalypsis) to depict his encounter with Christ (v. 12). It is debated whether Paul means that Christ himself was revealed to him (taking the genitive Iēsou Christou as objective), 21 that Christ revealed the gospel to him (a subjective genitive),22 or, perhaps most likely, that Paul's gospel is rooted in “Christ's revelation (a “general” genitive).23 In any case, the use of this terminology reinforces Paul's emphasis on the determinative nature of 24 Christ's appearance." A Theology of Paul and His Letters: The Gift of the New Realm in Christ | Douglas J. Moo | "These two basic parts of the paragraph develop chiastically the thesis of verses 11-12: (a) my gospel is not from any human source (vv. 11–12a), rather (b) it came by revelation (v. 12b); (b') when God revealed his Son to me (vv. 13–16a), (a') I did not consult with any human being (vv. 16b–17)." A Theology of Paul and His Letters: The Gift of the New Realm in Christ | Douglas J. Moo | "The language Paul uses to describe his own apostolic commission or "call" in verse 15 alludes to the call of God's Servant in Isaiah 49:1 -"Before I was born the LORD called me; from my mother's womb he has spoken my name —and Jeremiah's call in Jeremiah 1:5—“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I 27 appointed you as a prophet to the nations."
James D. G. Dunn, The Theology of Paul the Apostle.
There he insists 'that the gospel preached by me is not of human origin. For it was not from a human being that I received it, neither was I taught it, but through a revelation (apokalypsis) of Jesus Christ' (Gal. 1.11-12).
James D. G. Dunn, The Theology of Paul the Apostle.
What Paul was convinced of on the Damascus road, however, was not simply this central confessional claim but also that this Jesus was now to be preached to the Gentiles. It is this latter point which Paul focuses on in his own most explicit reference to his conversion: God revealed "his Son in me, in order that I might preach (euangelizomai) him among the Gentiles" (Gal. 1.15-16).78 It
James D. G. Dunn, The Theology of Paul the Apostle.
The resolution of the tension between Galatians 1 and 1 Cor. 15.1-7 confirms that Paul's sense of commission as apostle to the Gentiles was a distinctive feature of Paul's understanding of the gospel from the first.
James D. G. Dunn, The Theology of Paul the Apostle.
This tie-in between apostleship and gospel was obviously of first importance for Paul, both in theory and in practice. An apostle could not ride roughshod over the gospel. Apostolic authority was conditional upon the gospel and subject to the norm of the gospel.35
David E. Garland
In 1 Cor. 15:3–5, however, Paul is speaking only about the facts surrounding Jesus’ death and resurrection. Many agree that he was not an eyewitness to Jesus’ ministry, and these facts were passed on to him by the tradition. In Gal. 1:11–12, he does not have in view the historical details on which the gospel is based but the interpretation of what those facts mean. The gospel is not simply a litany of facts... Paul asserts in Gal. 1:11–12 that he came to understand the theological ramifications of Christ’s death and resurrection through a revelation from Christ and did not receive it from another’s interpretation...
B. J. Oropeza, 1 Corinthians.
They have also received the benefit of salvation due to God calling Paul and sending him to proclaim the gospel, the testimony concerning Christ (cf. 1:18; 15:1-4). That message was confirmed as effectual among them by their acceptance of it, conversion, and spiritual gifts in which they now operate.

III. (Actionable Revisions)

(Anachronistic Dogmatic Projection)
- divina origo → "인간의 사슬을 끊어내신 하나님의 주권적 침노"
- testimonium Spiritus Sancti → "부활하신 그리스도가 선포되는 말씀 속에서 자신을 친히 드러내시는 현현적 역사"
